I made this square necklace in 2014 and it is one of the catwalk pieces that I prepared for the Siempre Viva Collection. It can be hung on a wall (away from the sun) or on your neck.
The frame is made of engraved bronze. The chain belongs to an old lamp that I bought at the Valparaíso Flea Fair at that time.
The landscape is a representation of the old saltpeter cemeteries in northern Chile. I made it in resin with natural inserts such as queñua bark, quinoa, chia, cumin, pepper and toasted flour, among others, and 22k gold leaf that gives the sky a golden halo.
Necklace length 56cm. (can be shortened on request). Frame size 12.5 x 9cm.
ABOUT THE ALWAYS ALIVE COLLECTION
It all started in 2013, when I made this animita necklace to remember my father. It was the beginning of my path through art jewelry. A jewelry of reflection and experimentation through which I am able to understand my world and the things that move me about it.
This work continued in 2014 when I learned about the almost extinct tradition of making tin crowns for the cemeteries of the saltpeter mines in the desert in northern Chile. These crowns, once rusted, closely resembled my animita. This is how the Siempre Viva collection was born.
Animitas, crosses, deserts, sun, reliquaries, colorful flower crowns, rusty flower crowns, and others, are part of this imaginary. The main materials used are copper, patinas and resin. In addition, each landscape is created with spices such as cinnamon, pepper, semolina and toasted flour among others.
Siempre Viva is a look at the syncretism that is expressed in the cult of the dead. The animitas and the colorful desert cemeteries are expressions of the worldview and aesthetics of the original peoples, which have slipped through time and persist until today. A colorful, decorated and accompanied death.
